I do think there’s a partially racial element in the way people have written about Hanif. What we tried to do was find itnimacy starting point to help one another. It really does hit a sore spot for anyone who has been in this position before. Most of the time he seemed to have his head in his hands, while I made notes on various stories I was writing, and then put my head in my hands.

Kureishi first went to Pakistan, where his father’s family had settled after Partition, in the s. He wants her to say I love you, please stay! Kureishi is very much a child of s hani – sex, drugs, rock’n’roll, the elevation of pleasure over responsibility, the imperative of freedom of thought, of expression, of behaviour. But family rows were common.
Fortunately, Patrice mostly shot what he needed and kueishi pleased with the performances.
Rarely has a book had such a strong impact on me with just one line. I felt rather ashamed, that it had been so easy for me and so hard for him.
